hw17 summary

1. what did you find

1.1. interesting about the article?

Many people found the fish-scale explanation interesting. Henry summed up a very good point about the article which could have made this a good article to read through:
"I liked the fact that the article didn't try to argue for/against a single type of creativity or another (individual vs. social). It does a good job of showing both the need for a combination of the two methods..."

1.2. not interesting about the article?

All the readers had different opinions about what in the article was not interesting to them, however I would say that Ryan Coyer pointed out something that was most likely not interesting to many people due to redundancy:
"The explanation of the EDC wasn't interesting because we've been exposed to it on numerous occasions."

2. what do you consider the main message of the article?

The main message of the article was picked up by almost everyone to be that social and individual creativity are linked, and it is hard to have one without the other.

3. pick ONE of the four systems described in the article (Envisionment and Discovery Collaboratory, Caretta, Renga Creations, CodeBroker) and discuss which aspects of individual and social creativity they support!

Regna creation was the most talked about system by the readers. They felt that art is an individual process by itself but then the system merges the art in order to create a new creation which could spark social creativity.

4. have you encountered interesting “boundary objects?” which ones? what features made them interesting?

The readers all had unique boundary objects. Due to this the impression I got, especially from westdb's explanation is that a large array of objects from our normal lives could be and are considered boundary objects.

5. describe the most creative activity from your OWN life and analyze the individual and social aspect of your creative act!

Each reader had a unique example to draw from. The one that I found the most interesting was the one explained by Nathan. He explained the introduction of microeconomics into his classroom (K-8), and the childrens reactions to having to purchase things throughout the year. I thought this was a very creative thing to do with children, and a good way to show the children the importance of good money managment.

6. which computational systems do you know which support individual and/or social creativity?

Many people listed the EDC as well as other well known applications like Photoshop and the Microsoft Office Suite.
