1. what did you find 1.1. interesting about the article? The most interesting part of the article to me was having parents not only give advice at home but at school as well. This is interesting to me because my parents all through out middle school and highschool wanted me to get good grades. Grades are all they cared about! They thought as long as I got a good grade that I was ok, personally I think it would have been better if they would have been involved in the areas of study I was involved in. 1.2. not interesting about the article? We all know that "adult-run" education is the norm and I felt it a little annoying for me as a reader for the writer to keep repeating this argument. 2. what do you consider the main message of the article? The main message of the article is that in order for teachers and students to be more effective in the classroom is to have an enviornment where parents, students and teachers are all involved. 3. analyze your own educational experience and 3.1. provide a rough estimate in percentage points for each category and child-run: 0% adult-run: 95% community of learners: 5% 3.2. one example for each category (in case you have encountered all three approaches) adult run - I walk into a classroom with an adult teacher the first day of class and I'm given a syllabus / schedule with what I'm going to do the rest of the semester. child run - Senior projects. We are given a project to undertake with out the help of any of the staff / professors / sponsors involved. (Does this count because it really isn't child-run because we were told to do this project for a class?) 4. which technologies are used / can be used /should be used to support 4.1. adult-run education The web I will alwasy (and so I won't use this below but just consider it automatic) consider a tool to support any education. With adult-run education it helps to give students an easier way to access such things as lecture notes. 4.2. child-run education Same as before I think that the web is a good source of information for students who are in the process of "child-run education". (Is this not the same as Learning on Demand and Self Educated Learning?) 4.3. community of learners education The swiki, svn, search engine and cvs are all technologies that support this. 5. analyze our course from the three dimensions: 5.1. adult-run education We our being taught not in a lecture type of enviornment but more as an adult-run enviornment. 5.2. child-run education We have been given independent research as well as personal projects to complete / explore during the course of the semester. 5.3. community of learners education This class represents a community of learners. We are all learning and contribute to the learning experience (I say this because I believe that even Gerhard and Hal while listening to other peoples opinions learn as well even though they are considered the teachers.) 6. which possibilities do you see to effectively integrate adult- and child-run education? Hands on!!!!! Simply telling the students what to do and making homework seem like a nightmare is not an effective way of learning. Give them the motivation and fun (like Squeak) so that they are not only acquiring new knowledge but want to acquire it as well. Teach them how to use software / systems that will benefit them in their assignments and then let them use these systems hands on to improve their knowledge of the concepts that are going on.
