1. what did you find (articulate the answers in your own words) 1.1. interesting about the article? The fact is functionality in our advanced technological devices are almost at the highest level it has evr been in human's capibility. Beyond this point, we are not going to use any functionality acquired. The examples explained on this article were really interesting, especially the one about drawing a computer. It also was interesting in the section about the clock and its real purpose. In addition, it was really good to learn that the true leader of e-commerce is Symbol Technologies and that most people don't even know about this company, even though they interact with it quite often. 1.2. not interesting about the article? We really enjoyed this essay, it has some very interesting information. 2. what do you consider the main message of the article? The main message is that our technology must be more human-centric and less techonological centric, i.e Palm Pilot. Also, all specialists of the different fields should work together as a team in order to improve technology in every possible way. Therefore, the need for collaboration will always be there to make a ceratin product better. 3. Please comment on the following claim: “Despite the increasing reliance on technology in our society, in my view, the key to designing a different future is to focus less on technology and engineering, and far more on the humanities and the design arts.” 3.1. agree / disagree? both 3.2. which are the personal consequences which you draw from this statement? Focus on both so in the end you will get the best of both. But, although our point is neutral, we feel that we are agreeing with the claim because there is always a need to look at humanities and design arts to apply technology to our world. We cannot focus on the what all the time, rather, we have to focus on the how, in other words, we have to focus on how to apply technology to our lives in order to make tasks simpler in the futur. 3.3. are the educational programs you are involved addressing this claim? Somehow, each major at CU requires a certain amount of hours of a field that has nothing to do with it. For example, for computer Science, students need to take around 52 credits of Humanities courses. It depends on the student of which courses he/she takes and so if those are going to be useful later on. Fortunately enough, there is a class like this, which is a computer science class, but incorporates learning and designing ideas. Also we are constantly addressing these issues and claims. 4. Please comment on the following claim: “Given the much discussed constraints on human ability, how can we expect an individual to maintain the requisite specialist knowledge in their technological discipline, while at the same time have the needed competence in industrial design, sociology, anthropology, psychology, etc., which this essay implies are required to do one’s job?” 4.1. agree / disagree? both 4.2. which are the personal consequences which you draw from this statement? It is good to expand our knowledge and know about every field, so in a given situation our performance is as good as it can be. However, there is no way we would be able to know everything. Not even centuries ago, when there were only few sciences that weren't as developed as today's sciences, there was no human being that knew everything. Therefore, there is no way today we can know or learn every single aspect of every science. 4.3. are the educational programs you are involved addressing this claim? Well as mentioned before, we have this course. CU also offers different courses in humanities. In the end, the student is the one who is responsible of choosing the courses that he thinks will help him/her in the future. The main issue is how would a student be able to take humanities and art courses that are relevant to his field of study and that would help him understand the role of his study in different areas. Also, students should be able to take courses which complement their education and make it so that the student has a more open view about his field and the world in general. 5. Do you feel that the “Design, Learning, and Collaboration” course addresses these two claims? Yes, the DLC class not only makes you read papers but it also makes the student think about this papers. The student comments on the ideas of those papers and in class we are able to build discussions based on what we read and commented. It seems like after reading an article, you get to hear some students own articles and opinions and get to comment on them again in class. therefore this class addreses these issues and help students build conclusions upon them.
