I have chosen to read the article related to the PiTaBoard Demo.
1.1) The interesting thing I found about the article was the suggested solution to the problem. I have never considered the problem in the past and found the idea of creating a manipulative model in which the stakeholders can modify the state of the solution repetitively very interesting.
1.2) I didn’t find the background material about the problems with HCI very interesting. It was necessary to understand the problem that is trying to be solved, but it wasn’t very interesting.
2.) The main message of the article is to explain the problem of trying to get a solution for the problem which involves many different people, with different views of the problem, that is optimally acceptable the entire group.
3.) I would like to know more about the actual compute system used to aid the stakeholders in solving the problem.
4.) I found the computer program and the model that recognizes the placement of different pieces to simulate changes to the neighborhood interesting. I liked the idea of the seed that grows and changed depending on the problem it is being presented. I like the flexibility and adaptability that the system suggests.
5.) I have never really considered the problem before and have never looked into it either. Therefore, I do not know any other related papers on the topic.
6.1) The design of the system is created using a model and common language to the problem so the people who will be using the system can more easily understand the scenario and the meanings of potential solutions. The system is designed from a seed of basic information that is entered by domain experts. The seed is able to grow through use to focus on the specifics needed to help solve the problem.
6.2) The system allows the users to learn on demand. They are able to implement an idea (i.e. a new bus route) and see how it would work. The users are able to see the actual route and explore in a more detailed fashion the effects of the implementation. For example, the users may add a bus route to the neighborhood and by seeing it in action, they find out that no one is using route. They learned that the route should be removed or changed to get people to ride it.
6.3) The entire idea behind the system is for multiple people to get together to try and solve their problem. Each person is able to move the route or add a park. Since everybody has a different view of the problem, the collaboration effort should provide a more satisfactory solution to the problem for everyone. It should also get the people involved to look at the problem differently as they see and understand other peoples’ points of view.
6.4) The media involved facilitate the problem solving. The people involved make changes to their solution. The media is able to save information about the changes, allowing the modifications to be retrieved and compared at a later time. It also holds more information in a more accessible form, so someone can quickly access data that may facilitate the decision making processes.
