1.1 How much (in percent) of the functionality of the HFA do you know?
People intuitively over estimate their abilities and I believe that is the case in our class. We have estimates from a minimal to a high of 80%. Most were in the 50% percentile range.
1.2 How do you learn new functionality?
Most individuals indicated that they learn new funcitionality 'on damand'. When they get stuck they find a way to learn a new feature. They use the HELP feature or ask another individual if they know or could help with the problem.
1.3 For MS-Word users: Is there a command in MS-WORD which "transposes two character" (e.g. "leanr" becomes "learn" by positioning the cursor between n and r and executing the command)?
Most did not know of the specific function. Some indicated spell check or auto-correct as suited for this purpose.
2. What have YOU learnt "on demand" in YOUR life? Briefly describe the most prominent examples.
Individuals indicated that they learn computer programs such as Python and others; a second language, and some being 'caught' in situations of practical life that necessitated learning on demand.
3. What do people have to know to be able to learn on demand?
Most people indicated that it is important to 'know' where to go to retrieve the critical informaion or process that enables them to do the task at hand. Trial and error methods, assimulation of information play a primary role in being able to manipulate the process for the intended function.
4. Why should one 'learn on demand' instead of relying on 'use on demand'?
Most of the class indicated that their preference was to 'learn on demand' as opposed to 'use on demand' because it seems to more flexible or easy to serve the purpose at hand. A couple of indidividual stated that 'use on demand' assumes prior knowledge and 'learn on demand' occurs when one is literally stuck on not being able to perform a function in order to complete a task. By learning on demand one becomes their own espistomologist and remembers what to do next time.
5.1 Which computer systems have you encountered which have a User Modeling Component?
Obviously, from the responses, windows is believed to afford a UMC
component.
5.2 Which has supported learning on demand?
Most responed windows. Some indicated other systems and the internet along with other programs such as Micorsoft Office, Flash, Fireworkds, Dreamweaver, C++, etc.
