HW 11 - DLC
1. choose MS-Word (or another HFA) as an example:
1.1. how much (in percent) of the functionality of the HFA do you know?
I think I know perhaps 50% of the functionality of MS-Word.
1.2. how do you learn new functionality?
I learn new functionality on demand. So when I want to do something in Word, I go looking for how to do it. Usually I am able to figure it out.
1.3. for MS-Word users: is there a command in MS-Word which "transposes two characters" (e.g., "leanr" becomes "learn" by positioning the cursor between n and r and executing the command)?
I don’t know of one, is there? I could look to find out. I could not find one. (used Help)
2. what have YOU learnt "on demand" in YOUR life? Briefly describe the most prominent examples.
I have learned almost completely on demand how to program in Python. I was not taught directly anything about Python, I just would look things up when I needed to know how to program something.
I have learned how to use any other new programs on my computer by demand. I did not take a class or even read a book, nor do I regularly go through tutorials (though sometimes I use tutorials).
I learned how to drive a stick shift on demand. I was taught how to drive an automatic in driver’s ed school, but had to seek out how to drive a stick (from my mom).
3. what do people have to know to be able to learn on demand?
In order to learn on demand (and be successful), people need to know where to look/ask for the information they want/need. Or at the very least need to know who to ask about where they should look.
4. why should one "learn on demand" instead of relying on "use on demand"?
Use on demand implies that you know how everything works up front. Learning on demand is more efficient in that you only find out what you want to know and those things are more likely to be remembered. Learning on demand can also take place through irregular avenues associated with using on demand, and can thus be much more meaningful to the person learning.
5. which computer systems have you encountered which
5.1. have a User Modeling Component?
MS-Word (I think), Windows.
5.2. supported learning on demand?
The internet, MS-Word, Microsoft Office, computer card games, internet gaming.
