Assignment 9

1. what do you consider the main argument of the article?

From the answers of the people in class, it seems that their main point is the importance of consumers also being designers. That the current media being produced does not take in consideration that an end-user can also be a designer that would like to change the tool or product it works with. Hence, there is the concept of meta-design, where you attempt to produce products that help users to design the products they use. Also there is a concern that this type of roles designer and consumer are, in our society, separated when they can and in some cases occur at the same time.

2. do you agree or disagree with the main argument? give a answer based on your own experiences?

Everyone agrees with the main argument of the article. They consider that consumers should be empowered with better products and the ability to affect the design of such products. Those consumers that do not wan to do so should also be able to use the products in the simplest way. But those consumers that do want to use the product at its fullest should be given the opportunity.

3. enumerate in which situations
3.1. you acted as a designer/active contributor

Most of the people in class gave examples of how they have acted as designers and contributors in their work environment; mostly on software development of different products. Then the second most noted example is of being designer and contributor in their educational career; either in research of their own or as an active member of a class. And the third most noted situation is that of a regular consumer, either in electronics or some other market product they have acquired.

3.2. you acted as a (passive) consumer

The class has agreed that watching TV is the activity where passive consuming takes place. Also some other activities where as a music consumer, and other products where you buy to just use them for their specific purpose (electrical appliances mainly).

3.3. situations in which you believe you should have acted differently

There is a concern on where you could act differently. Like situations where there is an opportunity to act differently, yet you do not. There are some people who considered that there is no opportunity and one would like for it to be.
