Assignment 9
Jennifer Tamez
3/1/03
1. what did you find
1.1. interesting about the article?
I found it interesting that when studies compared older students doing the same experiment or being tested on the same material as younger students who had a different method of learning information the younger students knew more or understood the experiment better.
1.2. not interesting about the article?
I found this entire article to be of interest to me.
2. what do you consider the main message of the article?
I think this article is saying that there are better and different ways to approach teaching and learning in the educational system. What has been the procedure is to memorize and spit back information. However, students don't understand how and why what they learned works or makes sense.
3. analyze and describe how you have learnt "Microsoft Word" (or a similar system incase you have never learnt MS-Word)
I was never "taught" how to use Microsoft Word. It has been a while since I learned this program, but I have done so by teaching myself. And even now, I don't know all the shortcuts or even the full capacity of what I can do with word. I use it for what I need to, which means I use the basics of the program, and because there hasn't been to much of a need for more, I haven't tried to learn more about it.
4. speculate of all the "information/knowledge" which you have today – how you have learnt it?; give a brief description of the two most interesting episodes
I think that through education, I was indtroduced to something, and not until I had a need for it in my everyday life, I improved and learned it better when I had hands on experience.
- In the TAM classes that I have taken. There were many programs that were hard to learn at first. But after having to do a project and just getting on the computer and figuring it out, I acutally learned it. The only thing is that I did not learn or teach myself any advanced functions of the programs. I learned better through hands on experience, but b/c I was teaching myself, I feel that my knowledge of the program was somewhat limited.
5. write in one short paragraph (a) what the following concepts means and (b) which role they have played in your learning (e.g., where you have encountered them)
5.1. learning by being told (meaning, personal relevance)
This is someone telling you facts - like lectures. All my education has been based on lectures - sometimes they are helpful and I learn best in this type of situation if I am very interested in the subject.
5.2. self-directed learning (meaning, personal relevance)
Teaching myself - having a desire to learn something on your own. Using Flash in my Capstone course b/c I haven't really had prior experience w/ it.
5.3. discovery learning (meaning, personal relevance)
I think this means you learn by discovering and figuring out something because you were actively involved and working on it. I learned how to use functions on my phone because I was trying to do something another specific function.
5.4. experiental learning (meaning, personal relevance)
I think this is experience base learning. I have learned how to ride a snowboard because I acutally went to the mountain and experienced how it felt and what I need to do and not do to get better.
5.5. informal learning (meaning, personal relevance)
This is learning not in a formal learning environment. I learned how to bake a cake at home with my mom when I was young.
5.6. collaborative learning (meaning, personal relevance)
This is learning by interaction and working with other people. I played basketball when I was young and we learned how to improve as a team. We all had to work and practice together to learn what works and what doesn't work.
6. which media have you used for your learning?
I think a lot of my learning has been experiental and informal learning. I feel like most of my learning has taken place at work, with family or friends in a place other than school.
