Assignment # 8
Nilo Tsung
Questions from your perspective as a role-play participant:
1. What were your impressions of your role-play experience?
It is very interesting. It is a very innovative approach to integrate emerging information technologies with transportation planning. I like it.
2. Where there any aspects of the role-play that made you apprehensive?
No.
3. Did you feel that the role-play contained any elements of what real users from a real neighborhood working on a real problem might have experienced?
I think it is a very good method which allows the concise and relevant information of every participant to be known to everyone else. Communications and negotiations can be more constructive.
4. What do you think might have been lacking from the experience that would have existed in a real situation rather than a role-play?
In the role-play, everyone was very polite because we were not fighting for any real conflicting interests. In the real situations, such as plannings for shopping malls, highways, jails, etc., people could have some serious conflicts of interests.
5. Were there any ways that the technology aided you in reaching a decision? Were there any ways that it impeded the process?
I think the information technologies could help more people in remote site to get participated in the planning.
During the class, we could see, from time to time, that the technology was not very matured. This kind of technical interruptions could impede the discussion.
Questions from a designer’s perspective:
1. Do you feel that there is any merit to this form of assessment compared to more traditional isolated task-oriented methods?
I do not know any so-called traditional methods for transportation planning, so it is very hard for me to make a comparison with this approach.
2. What insights do you think that might be gleaned from using this technique that other techniques might miss?
I think the information during discussion can be recorded much easier.
3. What limits do you see to the technique?
I wish it could be extended to a 3D planning platform.
4. What aspects of the design do you think could be added, removed, or improved to better support the desired participatory outcomes of the process? These can be related to the technology, the social setup, the information provided, the process followed, or other aspects that you think are important.
1. I think the system should include an embedding critiquing system based the information and wishes of each participant.
2. I think the system should allow people in remote site to participate the discussion.
3. The session, including discussion and process on the PitaBoard, can be recorded.
