HW 7 by Sarah Kim-Warren 1. what did you find 1.1. interesting about the article? The article explains some concepts (i.e.> cognitive ethnography) and gives a few detailed examples, so it was easy to read and follow. The most interesting point I read in this article is that I agree very strongly with the example of "Intelligent Use of Space". I can reflect this idea on my physical workspace and my computer workspace. It is so true that I put so much effort into organizing and re-organizing as soon as I find myself searching longer than my anticipation for a document or any other needed items. 1.2. not interesting about the article? The article was generally interesting. 2. what do you consider the main message of the article? Distributed cognition plays an important part of HCI design, and it needs to be considered among a group or groups of people who are trying to solve a problem. 3. are themes discussed in the article which you would like to know more about? N/A 4. please describe briefly your understanding of 4.1. distributed cognition? is information or knowledge that can be found and can be shared among participants and/or groups. For example, a city planner does not know what an engineer knows or a financial specialist, so they have to discuss where and how to build a new building together. 4.2. ethnography is a method or technique to observe, to document, to analyze, and to describe interactions of a user with a system (i.e.> what people know and how to use what they understand). 4.3. active representations (which is the most important example you can think of?) is a part of cognition process and requires action and time. I found the example of "Intelligent Use of Space" to be most interesting because I was able to relate to the topic. 5. the article talks about "new foundations" for HCI 5.1. please discuss a couple of "old foundations" for HCI An old foundation for HCI was focus on individual cognition (i.e.> single individual's interaction with computer). 5.2. how "new" according to your knowledge are these "new foundations"? A new foundation in my knowledge is single individual can interact with a networked computers or devices, or a group of people interact with each other or other groups without being together physically. 6. do you have any ideas how this research could / should be extended based on your own knowledge and experience? I’d like to know how to measure an effectiveness of communication technology or methods that are currently being used over distance (i.e.> emails and chat programs). 7. in the class on Jan 14, 2004, we showed a multi-media show about the CLever project. Question: which elements of distributed cognition are described in this video? In the video, there were a few different elements and peoples were involved to help one person who had a mental disability. The caretaker put together some maps and scripts, which were created on a PC and loaded in to a PDA, to provide a guide effectively. The lifeline program supplied current information about the location of the person and status. This type of interaction (distributed cognition) could not be possible if the lifeline program or maps and scripts were not available in her PDA. |
